Sano y Salvo belongs to IFOAM. We are an ecological small farmers association, with mestizo and indigenous membership. Living in the humid tropics, we do mainly diversified, sucesional agro-forestry, trying to contribute to rescue soils and water and biodiversity of this (former) rainforest land, and saving the naturally protected areas and reservations, lobbying politicians, NGOs etc. Among us are the pioneers of organic agriculture in Nicaragua. SE Nicaragua was named "Biosphere of Humankind" by UNESCO in 2003. We do CO2-fixation by planting thousands of new trees every few months.
We have a strong female sector, doing there own certified organic production (small livestock and agroforestry) for marketing and family use.
We try to reconcile mestizos and Rama indigenous people, having been the first the settlers who just "took" indigenous land and destroy it by extensive cattle keeping and inappropriate agriculture. Sano y Salvo unites them under the roof of ecological agroforestry and rescue of forests and biodiversity.
We are working, too, in the National ORGANIC AGRICULTURE movement, and the COALICIÓN PARA LA CONSERVACIÓN DE LA BIOSFERA DEL SURESTE?, in GALCI Latino América y el Caribe, and in activities of the autonomy of the Nicaraguan Caribbean Coast.
We produce, process and semi-process on farm and at our central plant, and we sell the stuff ourselves.
Spirulina contains a staggering array of essential nutrients for our bodies. Not only does it contain over 60% complete protein (almost three times as much as that found in beef!), it has high concentrations of many other important vitamins and minerals, such as B complex vitamins, vitamin E, carotenoids, iron, manganese, zinc, essential fatty acids such as gamma linolenic acid (which is only otherwise found in mother's milk), and more beta carotene than you can find in carrots! Spirulina is also one of the few plant sources of vitamin B12, which is essential for healthy nerves and tissues.
Cocoa beans are a good source of calcium, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, and potassium, in addition to vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, C, E, and pantothenic acid. Cocoa also contains high amounts of protective antioxidant compounds, such as polyphenols and flavonoids. Cocoa is remarkably rich in magnesium, which balances brain chemistry, builds strong bones, and is essential for helping the heart pump blood efficiently. It is also a good source of sulphur, which is known as "the beauty mineral" because of its support of healthy skin, nails, and hair.
Maca is so nutrient-packed that Inca warriors reportedly consumed it to energize themselves for battle. Although unrelated to Ginseng, it is sometimes referred to as Peruvian ginseng because of its similar properties
Dried Maca contains about 59% carbohydrates, 10% protein, and 2.2% lipids. It contains a number of sterols, including sitosterol, campestrol, ergosterol, brassicasterol and ergostadienol. Maca is also a good source of iron, magnesium, calcium (more than milk), potassium and iodine.
